The Pirates are tied for second in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference with an 8-3 record. They improved to 10-8 overall after a 1-7 start.

Danielle Peters and Kelly Jo Fields are back at making things happen as junior members of the UNC-Pembroke softball team.
The former Union Pines athletes played key roles in the Brave’s season opening 9-0, 13-6 sweep of St. Andrews on Saturday.
Peters, the team’s center fielder and lead-off hitter, started a three-run first in the opener with a single. She went on to go three for six in the two games with five runs scored and three stolen bases.
The Vass resident was second in the nation last year in stolen bases with 56 in 57 attempts. She needs only 22 more to break the all-time Peach Belt record. She was an all-conference and all-region selection.
Fields, from Carthage, played at second and short in the first two games, handling 11 chances flawlessly. She also went one for three at the plate, with a run-scoring double.
Former Viking teammate Lisa Jackson is also expected to don a glove for the Methodist College softball team at the end of the basketball season. She joined the Monarch softball team late last year in time to start 25 games and bat .300 as the team’s catcher.
